Caleb Varney Wheaton North OL/DT Class of 2023 5'11 275
Caleb Varney how was your first week back on the field? It was great. Had a good time getting back on the field with all of my brothers and over all ended exactly how I thought it would. I think by beating downers south the way we did with the number of mistakes we made showed how much potential our team really has this year. What does football mean to you? Everything. I’ve been playing since I was in 2nd grade and seeing how much I have progressed has been a beautiful thing. There’s nothing I love more than being a lineman and making my running backs look like they are making plays effortlessly. What do you feel is your strongest trait on the football field? I think my aggressiveness and my passion towards being a student of the game are definitely my strongest traits. The strength I’ve gained every off season has also been a big game changer all around. What do you like about playing in the trenches? Getting low and having to compete against the guy against you every play. I think it really comes down to who wants it more and I don’t think there is anyone that wants to win more than I do. I’ve also done it my whole career, so I have a good understanding of what it takes to be a good offensive lineman. Who is one player on Wheaton North that impressed you last Friday? Considering there are so many of them, this is a tough question. My center Elisha Cook blew me away with his intensity and his motor. QB Max Howser has shown great improvement since the beginning of camp and he really impressed me Friday, considering how big of shoes he had to fill with Mark Forcucci at QB last year. A few more names were Walker Owens, Matt Kucjai, Luke Diericx, Luke Beedle, Ty O’Connor, and also Ross Dansdill. There were plenty more, but these guys especially impressed me. What goals do you have for yourself the rest of the season? This season I plan on being an All-Conference lineman again, and I also am working towards receiving Dukane Lineman of the Year. I think I have a great shot considering I had a hell of a junior season and have only improved. I’ve been thinking about winning this award since I was a sophomore, so I am really working towards that.
