This is one of the many reasons why Deep Dish Football is respected in the IHSA. Every Football Player Has A Story To Tell

Joe Hunt University OL/DE Class Of 2024 6'1 220

Joe Hunt how is your summer going so far? My summer is going great so far, I’ve been making a lot of improvements personally on my strength and leadership at our morning lifts and OTA’s. I’ve also been making a lot of strides in my technique at the camps I’ve been too, and I’ve been learning from knowledgeable coaches in my position areas. How was your junior season? My junior season was full of big improvements for me. I made the move from varsity center as a sophomore to left tackle and got to learn the position and I started the entire season there. My junior season was also my first season where I worked my way to become a 2-way starter as a defensive end too, which allowed me to help my team on both sides of the ball. We made a lot of progress as a team and we were the best I’d ever seen us, and even though we fell short of our overall goal of a playoff berth, we’ll get back there this year.

What should college coaches know about you? I’m the hardest worker they’ll ever meet. I care about every little detail, on and off the field. I make the best out of every opportunity that I work hard to earn, and I always pursue excellence in everything I do. I take pride in my team and what we do and work to uphold the team traditions and culture, and I’m a reliable player, teammate, and leader on and off the field.

What does football mean to you? Football means everything to me. I’ve played football my entire life, and the game has taught me so many things through my life. I love football, and I love the people, and the bonds I’ve made through the sport. What do you like about playing in the trenches? I like the bond I form with the other lineman, it’s completely unique to the trenches. I love the 1 on 1 against the defender, and giving it all you have every single play, and it’s the same way for me on defense, and when I win the play, it’s an incredible feeling that even beats a touchdown.

How does University look for the upcoming season? We’re looking the best we’ve looked since I’ve been here, a lot more guys are buying in to the team culture and putting in more time and effort for the team. We have more guys than ever going to off-season lifts and training, whether they’re returning players or the guys we got out of the hallways at school, and it’s definitely having a positive impact on the field. Now that we’re starting to do installs, the team is really coming together nicely. We have everything we need to make the playoffs this year, and I’m confident we’ll end the playoff drought. Who else on University should we keep an eye out for this upcoming season? Martin Donahue and Cole Matejka, they’re both going to be juniors and they’re having a great offseason. Martin is a LB with good size and a great work ethic, he’s been starting on varsity since his freshman year, and he’s done a great job. Cole is OL/DL with great size, he’s coming off an injury and is putting in a lot of work to get stronger and faster, and he’s looking great. He’s also a big leader on and off the field.

What are your goals for the upcoming season? To be an all-conference offensive lineman for the Central State Eight. I’ve learned a lot of new blocking techniques from different coaches in the off-season, and I’ve also gotten a lot bigger since last season, which will help me in the trenches. I also want to help get my team back to the playoffs for the first time since 2015. I want to receive an offer to play college football, football is everything to me, and I want to play at the next level, no matter what.
