Coach Big Pete's Scouting Notes On Phu Truong

Phu could be one top linebackers in the state of Illinois for this upcoming season. One of the more technically sound linebackers in the Land of Lincoln. Great pursuit off the snap and knows how to keep his hips in check when tackling. Undersized, but could be a HUGE STEAL!!!!

Phu Truong how has your offseason been so far? My off-season has been great. I joined the wrestling team for the first year to help with my tackling and explosiveness. I’ve been to meetings with my coaches to really master my position, and I have been consistent in the weight room. How was your junior season last fall? My junior season was a big leap from my sophomore season. My football IQ as well and physical strength improved drastically and it really payed off. What does football mean to you? I’ve never be apart of a “football family”. However, joining the football team was one of the best decisions in my life. I became a part of a strong brotherhood, and I built some bonds with coaches and players that will last for the rest of my life.

What was one of your favorite memories last season? One of my most memorable moments from last season was when we defeated Saint Patrick to go to playoffs. We have worked extremely hard during the off season and just to watch it pay off was incredible. Our football program has not been to the playoffs for a few years, so this was huge for us and the coaching staff. What do you like about playing linebacker? Playing Linebacker allows me to deliver a big hit on the running back or quarterback or make a play on the ball on a pass play. It is a very versatile position and that’s what I love about it. What should college coaches know about you?

Colleges should know that I am a football player that plays hard every play. I am a competitive, coachable player with a hard work ethic. I am obsessed with the game of football, therefore I am willing to do what it takes to succeed. How was your wrestling season? For my first year of wrestling, I think I had a good season. I was one win away from going to sectionals. I learned a lot of about being mentally tough and the importance of timing.

What would you say to students who considering joining football this upcoming season? I would say joining the football team is a great way to meet new people from players to coaches. You will create memories that u will never forget for the rest of your lives. Football isn’t a sport like golf where everyone can play in the future. For those that are new to football, don’t be afraid to ask questions, develop a strong work ethic, and watch film if you are looking to excel. What goals do you have for yourself this season? I have huge goals for this season. I want to be named at least All-Conference at the end of the season. I want to lead the team into the playoffs as well as win the conference.
