Vinny Rugai St. Ignatius Athlete Class of 2023 6'0 195

Vinny Rugai how was your junior season? I had a great junior year; we had the best season in our programs history. Unfortunately we lost in the second round of the playoffs but I really felt like we had a chance to make a run. I won the Chicago Catholic League offensive player of the year award and set the school single season rushing record. It was a year I’ll never forget. What does football mean to you? Football has been apart of my life for as long as I can remember. From my brother and I crushing each other in the basement to Friday night lights, it has always been my favorite thing to do. Football for me is an escape from everyday life and the chance to play the sport I love. What schools have talked to you so far? Princeton, Columbia, Yale, Georgetown, Holy Cross, Butler, Dayton, Saint Thomas, Bowling Green, Drake, Indiana State, Eastern Illinois, Wash U, University of Chicago.

What should college coaches know about you? I’m going to do everything I can do to keep playing the game I love for 4 more years. What do you feel is your strongest trait on the football field? I think my IQ and knowledge of the game is shown on the field. I really feel I’m a student of the game and take my film watching very serious. This results in me being able to tell where the ball is going every play. What part of your game have you been working on in the offseason? I’ve been working on my speed. I feel like I can finally turn on the second gear now. How has your 7on7 season been so far at the Westmont Yard? Very good, we are a run dominant team so it’s been fun to throw the ball around. I’ve also been calling the plays so I enjoy coming up with new things to try out. We are undefeated so far and looking to win the championship! What do you like about calling plays for 7on7? I’m able to break down what their trying to do on the spot rather than watching film and preparing during the week. I also like when I draw up a play from scratch and we score. It reminds me of recess in grammar school, just some buddies having a good time. What goals do you have for yourself this upcoming senior season? I want to win a state championship. That has been a goal of mine for a while. It’s my last chance at it and I want to make it happen. I’d also like to win the Lawless award in the Catholic League, another childhood dream of mine. Lastly, I’d like to make all state. I’ve been working this off season to make these goals become a reality.
