Evan Roper Barrington LB Class of 2021 6'1 215
Evan Roper how was your 2019 season?
My 2019 season was great. It was my first opportunity to get playing time after breaking my leg on varsity my sophomore season and I couldn’t wait to get back on the field. I learned a lot as the season went on and had to step into more of a leadership role when our senior mike linebacker suffered a season-ending injury in week 5. After that, I had to become more of a vocal leader of our defense. It wasn’t easy at first but through lots of practice, I was able to be the vocal leader that my team needed. However, our season came to an end too soon in a tough playoff loss to Niles Notre Dame, but it showed me and the rest of the team what we need to do this coming season to be successful in those kinds of games. Having lost that close game, it has made us hungrier to come back stronger than ever.
What does football mean to you?
Football is something that has taught me so much. From the discipline of waking up for early morning workouts to the brotherhood that we form every year, I have learned many lessons from football that will benefit me for the rest of my life.
What do you like about playing linebacker?
I like that playing linebacker allows me to be the leader of the defense. Not only because I communicate calls from the sidelines but because I enjoy being able to bring the best out of each of my teammates every single day.
What schools have you talked to so far?
I have talked to Cornell, Harvard, Yale, Drake, Wash U, Miami of Ohio, Olivette Nazarene, and Holy Cross.
What should college coaches know about you?
I want college coaches to know that I am coachable and that I am able to fit into any sort of scheme or role that a coach would want to put me in.
How was your wrestling season?
My wrestling season was a blast. As a team, we took 3rd at state which was the highest team finish in school history, and individually I took 3rd at state at 220 lbs with a record of 35-5.
How does this Barrington squad look for 2020?
We have a few starters coming but such as Ethan Potocki(DE), Logan Ambroz(OL), Joey Gurskis(WR), and Matt Blasius(OL). Along with that, we are going to have a lot of seniors that will be starting for the first time on offense and defense because we started so many seniors last year. But, there are a couple of guys that could really make an impact like, Peter Anderson (QB), Jackson Gehrisch (DB), and Mark Gorbatenko(DL). Once we get going with practice and get familiar with each other on the field I think that we will be a top team in the MSL west and make a run in the playoffs.
What do you feel is your strongest trait on the field?
My biggest strength on the field as a linebacker is my ability to use my hands to shed blocks and make tackles. One of the biggest crossovers between football and wrestling is using your hands and positioning to create angles on your opponent and I have been able to apply those skills into the way that I shed blocks and make tackles on the field.
