Drew Cassens how was your 2018 season?
We had a successful year in terms of transitioning with a new coaching staff and learning a new offense. Our team goal was to qualify for the playoffs. Unfortunately, we fell short of that goal but we had that goal within reach through week 9. I enjoyed my role as a two-way starter and the many opportunities to contribute to the team.
Favorite memory from last season?
My favorite memory from this past season was beating Downers Grove South. We received the ball at the beginning of the game and our first drive took 10 minutes off of the clock. I had never been on a team that had that kind of drive before. It ended up being a close battle the entire game and we won 10-0 at home.
What schools have you talked to so far?
I’ve attended Western Michigan’s junior day and have scheduled visits to Southern Illinois and Minnesota State. Several other schools have shown interest, but nothing is scheduled with them to this date.
What would you like college coaches to know about you?
I have a 3.5 GPA I have 4 varsity letters (2 for football and 2 for basketball) 2017 Football Season: Starter as S/OLB Led the team in interceptions Led the team in forced fumbles 2018 Football Season: Two-way starter (QB/S) Led the team in rushing and passing (O) Co-led the team in interceptions (D) WSC Silver Division Co-Offensive Player of the Year DuPage Country 1st Team All-Area IHSFCA 7A All-State Selection In addition to weight training, I train at QB Farm with Steve Greggory
and GET FAST INC for speed and agility. Made the top three record board (speed test) for my age group each of the last three years at Get Fast.
What game are you most looking forward to for the upcoming season?
This upcoming season I’m looking forward to the Hinsdale Central game. It’ll be my last shot at winning the bucket, and I’ve also never beat a Hinsdale football team and this will be my final opportunity. The Hinsdale Central game always has a great atmosphere and it’s my favorite rivalry that I’ve ever been apart of.
Who are some players on Downers North that I should be on the look out for this season?
Mark Dennison who played DB for us last year. He’s a hard hitter and he works extremely hard. Also, Hunter Campbell who played right tackle. Hunter works really hard, he is one of the smartest people I know, and he gets the job done every play.
What effect has Coach Horeni had on the program after 1 year?
Coach Horeni has had a great impact on the program and our new identity. He brought in Coach Kent who implemented a spread offense for all levels that he has previously ran. Horeni also brought the whole program together and he keeps trying to do more and more each day so we can perform the best we can once the season starts. I’ve loved everything that he has done for us so far.
