Reese Edwards Class of 2021 Linebacker Sacred Heart Griffin 6'3 185
Reese Edwards how was your 2018 season?
Last season we came up short for our team goal, which is always to get to the state championship game. Personally, I really enjoyed 7 on 7, camps, practices and games, and I learned a lot as a sophomore. I had a lot of fun because it was the first time I’ve ever been able to play football with my brother Grant, who’s a senior. It was also an honor to start for SHG as a sophomore, earn a spot on the Conference team as one of the top tacklers in the Central State 8, and be a part of a historical season for Coach Leonard as he broke the Illinois High School all time wins record.
Favorite memory from last season?
The highlight of the season was when Coach Leonard broke the record with 376 wins when we beat Rochester 45-6 at home for a huge, televised Leonard Bowl. I also have great memories of the traditions that Cyclone football players have the night before and the day of our games. I will always remember these traditions that have been passed down from class to class and I look forward to many more for my junior and senior seasons.
What were you able to learn from your brother these past 2 seasons?
He tells me all the time that football in HS is not to be taken lightly, it goes fast, and what you put into it will shape who you are in life. If you work hard and never give up, the lessons that football teaches you will be with you forever. Grant has the best work ethic of anybody I know, and that is why he’s going on to play D1 football at Eastern Illinois University. I’ll never forget after we lost a close playoff game that we had won, and should have won vs. Washington….he hugged me and reminded me that his story at SHG was now over and how I need to finish what he and the senior class started and that I need to cherish every second I have on the football field with these guys.
What should college coaches know about you?
I would like college coaches to know that I take football very seriously, but I also have a lot of fun with my teammates and coaches during practice and school. They should probably also know that I’ve played QB, WR, and Special Teams. Besides LB, I will probably help out my team on offense this season.
What is one thing in your game that you want to improve during this offseason?
I always run hurdles and relays to develop speed in the offseason and I am working really hard to build total body strength and size by working as hard as I can in the weight room. As a Linebacker, I want to run straight through people and not just drag them down. That’s the difference between being 175 lbs as a Sophomore and over 200 lbs as a Junior.
How was your wrestling season?
Wrestling is another passion of mine. I’ve been wrestling since I was 5 years old. I was really happy to make it through the state series regionals and to sectionals as a Sophomore. It was an honor to break the single season wins record at SHG with being the first wrestler to hit 34 wins.
What does football mean to you?
I can sum up what football means to me with a quote I really like by Brian Dawkins (Weapon X), Hall of Fame Eagles Safety…..”I want to be the best at what I do…and what I do isn’t very nice”.
Football is one of the most important activities in my life and has always been my favorite sport since I played flag as a first grader. The competition is what drives me, I always try to be better than my opponent and I try to get my guys around me fired up before and during battle. To survive, you have to elevate to a whole different level than who you are up against. The feeling of nervousness mixed with adrenaline before a game as we run out of the Cyclone tunnel can’t be compared to anything I’ve done. It has always been my goal to play high level HS and college football since I was little and used to go to games with my family.
What game are you most looking forward to this upcoming season?
Besides winning the conference, the state championship game.
