Luke Gatewood Class of 2021 Hinsdale Central OL 6'3 260
Luke Gatewood how was your 2019 season?
My 2019 season was a great year. I came into the year fighting for the starting position behind a senior and won it week 5 against DGN. After that, it was full steam ahead. As a team, we went 8-1 in the regular season and lost in the first round of the playoffs. Over my junior year I have learned how to be a better football player and how to be a leader on and off the field.
What schools have you talked to?
The schools that have contacted me so far include Bowdoin, Minnesota Duluth, Knox College, Augustana College, University of Indianapolis and Minnesota State-Moorhead.
What should college coaches know about you?
The thing I want college coaches to know about me is that I am ambitious. As a rising freshman, I was a novice to football. Over the last three years, I have worked vigorously to catch up to my more experienced peers. I was and am determined to maximize my potential on and off the field. I am continuously setting goals and working to exceed them. Another aspect I would like college coaches to know about me is that I am a team player. Over the years, I have learned the importance of being a team player and more importantly how I thrive in a team environment.
What do like about playing in the trenches?
The thing I love most about playing in the trenches, is being able to hit the defensive lineman to submission. Personally, I find that the most satisfying feeling is when you push a defensive lineman to submission, when you can feel them give up. In my opinion the line is not only about physical toughness, but about mental toughness, and when you push someone to the brink of giving up, you know you have won and it makes it that much more satisfying.
How does Hinsdale Central look for 2020?
As an incoming Senior in 2020, I am projecting that we will have an exciting season this year. Our offensive coordinator is coming in on his second year and I cannot wait to see how our offense develops. Our offensive line this year is very close and we have established a good rapport. In addition, we have a good amount of returning starters, and a talented group in next years junior class. After our loss to Bolingbrook last year in the playoffs, we made it a team goal to be the strongest and toughest team on the field. Our offseason has been centered around this objective. Our team, Hinsdale Central, as the capability to exceed expectations and make a deep playoff run! We are eager to hit the "turf" running this fall.
What does football mean to you?
Football is a huge part of my life. Coming into high school I had never played football. When I started playing my freshman year, I found joy in the brotherhood and work ethic that football required. Since then, I have centered my life around football and how to improve my knowledge about the sport, skills to help me be the best athlete I can be and becoming a leader on and off the field. Whether it is hitting the weight room or joining the wrestling team this year, I have centered my life around football. For me it is not only a sport, but a lifestyle that requires one to leave it all on the line.
What do you feel is your strongest trait on the field?
My strongest trait on the football field is my determination. I will work as hard as I can on and off the field to accomplish greatness each and everyday. An example of this can be seen in my quest to perfection in every down I play. Although not every play is perfect, I always strive to learn from my mistakes and be the best I can be.
