Patrick McDowell Hinsdale Central Class of 2022 ATH 6'2 188

Patrick McDowell how has your summer been?

My summer has been a ton of fun. I’ve been really busy with camps, but I’ve enjoyed the process and the grind. I definitely feel I’ve grown as a player over this summer.

What schools have you been talking to?

My communication with University of San Diego began with me reaching out due to me being out there this past week. We were able to get a visit lined up, and I had a great introduction while I was out there and a fun experience seeing the campus and facilities. Outside of that, it has mostly just been introductions with coaches that I’ve talked to at the two Prospect Camps I’ve attended.

What should college coaches know about you?

College coaches should know that I’m an incredibly hard worker and that I’m more than willing to put in the time to have success as an individual and for the team as a whole, whether that be on the field or in the classroom. I think they should also know that I’m a leader for my teammates and always try to make it so that we have an environment where we can have fun but be productive and successful.

What do you feel is your strongest trait on the field?

I think my strongest trait is my versatility. Although I spend majority of my time at safety I have the capability to play a multitude of positions on the field.

Who helped you out the most during your freshmen season?

Obviously the coaching staff was great during my freshman season. We had a great year as a team and I believe I really grew as a player. My brother Scott was very helpful as he’s played at the Big Ten level so I always make it a point to soak up info from him whenever I can. When playoffs came around I was really fortunate to be called up and learn from the older guys and take back the lessons I learned to the great group of guys that we have in the class of 2022 at Hinsdale Central. Specifically guys like Owen and Guy Goss, Drew Novatney, and countless other upperclassmen who either recently graduated or are now entering their senior years helped show me the ropes during playoffs and this offseason. The guys were fun and worked with me a lot, acting as mentors, even as many of them were preparing to have themselves a great final season this year.

What part of your game have you been working on in the offseason?

I’ve been trying to work on all aspects. I’ve gained over 20 lbs in muscle this offseason while working on getting my feet faster, and improving on overall explosiveness via weight room and field work that I can translate to the field. I also stumbled upon some great resources on YouTube that do film analysis on college and NFL players that have helped me with my understanding of my position and defensive concepts in general.

What goal do you have for yourself this season?

This season I’m looking to ensure that the work I put in translates and I become even more of a complete player. I want to be dangerous back there as a ballhawk, breaking up plays and giving our offense more possessions. I also want to be a dominant run stopper and fly down the field not allowing for there to be big run plays that gash our defense. I want to make sure I still act as a leader, rallying the troops, and leading by example through my play and through being a student of the game and watching lots of film week in and week out. My goal is to help lead the team to another successful year and really make some noise.
