Woodstock's QB Michael Purkey Talks Recruiting & Upcoming Season Class of 2020

So in a way to better understand the use of Deep Dish Football for lllinois recruits and the whole entire IHSA Football scene. Decided to do player profiles of players who you might not know or you might know , but you should respect them for their roles on their respective teams. Every Football Player Has A Story To Tell

Michael Purkey Woodstock QB 6'3 190 Class of 2020

Michael Purkey how was your 2018 season?

Our 2018 season wasn’t how we wanted it to go. With a very large injury bug we ended up losing 16 of 40 guys, a lot of them being key players. This meant a lot of guys had to step up and fill some big shoes. This also meant I spent a lot of time on the field with my future varsity teammates. We ended up with a losing record, but we were close to winning several of our games and I felt that I learned a lot throughout the season on how to be a leader and show the team that we should never give up.

What does football mean to you?

Football is a way of life for me. You would not believe how many times I say, “I’m busy” and people always say “Oh do you have training for football?” It’s something that creates family and a football family is something you will never lose. I love working and perfecting my game and there is no other sport I would choose to play over football.

Favorite memory of 2018?

My favorite memory of the season was when we played Ottawa Township High School. It was a shootout which meant our offense was on fire. I ended up with 4 TD’s and 297 yards passing which was my 2nd best game of the season, but the best part was the feeling of winning after driving almost 2 hours away for the game.

What schools have you talked to?

I have received many invitations to camps from various colleges and universities. I have personally communicated with: Augustana College, MSU-Moorehead, UW-La Crosse, Western Illinois, and Southern Illinois.

What should college coaches know about you?

College coaches should know that I am very coachable. I am always looking for things to improve and I am willing to learn new concepts and ideas given to me. Also the ideal of working hard on and off the field is something I strive for. There’s is no time when I do not want to be the best for myself and the team.

What game are most excited about this season?

This season I am most excited that we are playing our rivals, Woodstock North, twice (since a school left our conference). I am looking forward to both of those games as they are always high energy and exciting.

What part of your game have you been trying to improve in the offseason?

This off-season I have been working most on being able to reading post-snap changes in coverage and analyzing film. I also have been working on quicker feet to move out of the pocket and allow me to have a quick release from an angle.

What does your summer college camp schedule look like?

This summer I will be attending camps at Augustana, Minnesota State - Mankato, MInnesota State -Moorhead, Illinois State, Lake Forest, University of Minnesota -Duluth, Southern, Eastern, and Western Illinois. I also hope to go to a few satellite camps to get more exposure.

Who else on Woodstock should I keep an eye out for?

You should keep an eye out for WR Nathan Archambeau. He is an upcoming junior and was a key receiver on the varsity level this 2018 season. He has great physicality and the softest hands you will ever see.

What goal do you have for yourself this upcoming season?

My goal this next season is for not only our team to make it to the playoffs, but also show the upcoming varsity team what it means to be a leader. I see this program on the rise and hope that I can personally influence younger Streaks to do everything with a team mentality.
