Benet's Athlete Michael Wymer Class Of 2019 Talks Redwing Season & Recruiting

So in a way to better understand the use of Deep Dish Football for Illinois recruits and the whole entire IHSA Football scene. Decided to do player profiles of players who you might not know or you might know , but you should respect them for their roles on their respective teams

Michael Wymer Benet Class of 2019 ATH 6'0 195

Mike Wymer how was your season?

My season was pretty good. I was lucky enough to be able to play four positions. The coaching staff had me and OLB, SS, RB, and a little bit of WR. I had a fun time playing those positions because I was able to help wherever I was needed. As a team, we did not meet the expectations we had for ourselves but I know we all gave it everything we had and left it all on the field

Favorite memory this season?

My favorite memory is definitely winning a hard fought game at JCA. Both teams played phenomenal and never quit. We got punched in the gut with an early touchdown from JCA but my guys never let up and I was very proud of that team win. Benet football is known for never giving up and finding a way to win and I feel like that game really showed it. The feeling of winning a good game during the last few seconds is one of the best feelings.

What position do you feel the most comfortable in?

I am a linebacker at heart and I will always feel most at home there. Playing safety was a great experience but linebacker is what I grew up playing. It comes natural to me and I like being able to sack the quarterback, make tackles for losses, shed lineman’s blocks, and also guard receivers and drop into coverage to defend the pass.

What does football mean to you?

Football is more than a sport to me. I have learned many lessons that will help me in life from playing football. It is different from other sports like basketball and baseball because for a team to win, they all have to work together to achieve it. It is hard to have one player carry the whole team unlike baseball and basketball for example. A football team builds a great bond and I have made life long friends from being apart of one. Working together and going through thick and thin with guys that I have trained and worked so hard with to win games is like no other. Football is also a great stress reliever for me. I know that if I have a bad day and things are rough, I always have my passion to look forward to that takes my mind away from those things.

What would you like college coaches to know about you?

I want college coaches to know that I am a player that will play any position I need to to win games. I am a player that will pick my teammates up with things are going bad and that I never let up. I always try to make big plays that will turn around the momentum of the game in our favor and that I always leave everything on the field so I have no regrets.

Give me some young Benet players to keep an eye out for?

Some juniors to look out for are Colin Gillespie, Jacob Snell, and Cole Walsh. Colin is a great overall quarterback and leader that works extremely hard. Jacob and Cole are both monsters on the defensive line. Some sophomores to look at are Graham Cooney, Connor Corrigan, and Nick Bafia. Nick Bafia is a younger version of Gillespie. Connor Corrigan is a great overall player that plays defensive line. Graham Cooney can play anywhere the coaches put him and still make big plays.

What advice do you have for incoming freshmen when they enter the Redwing program?

Biggest advice is to not take any of it for granted. My time at Benet flew by extremely fast and before I knew it my Benet football career was done. My advice is to play every play like it is their last and to keep working hard on the field, off the field, and in the classroom.
