So in a way to better understand the use of Deep Dish Football for Illinois recruits and the whole entire IHSA Football scene. Decided to do player profiles of players who you might not know or you might know , but you should respect them for their roles on their respective teams
Ryan VanSchelven Class of 2019 QB Hononegah 5'10 185
Ryan VanSchelven how was your season?
It was fantastic, we went 10-1 and finished off our second straight undefeated conference championship. It was a heartbreaking ending to a great Wheaton Warrenville South team in a tough loss, but I think we proved that Hononegah can play with some of the bigger teams outside of our conference.
Favorite memory this season?
I have 2. Winning at Boylan and winning against Harlem to win the conference championship (our 2 biggest rivals). They were thrilling games that went down to the wire. Games I’ll never forget.
What does Hononegah football mean to you?
It means the world to me. It has done so much for me over the past 4 years. I created so many friendships and memories, and learned so many life lessons. It went by way too fast.
What do you like about playing QB?
I love bringing so much energy to practice and games to spread to my teammates. I also love taking on the leadership role of a quarterback. I share so much respect with all of my teammates so we trust each other which creates success.
So I got to ask... What is one of the funniest things that you ever did as a QB with your line?
Well they’re all so much bigger than I am, so I would constantly joke around with them about me taking on big D linemen and being “the best blocker on the team”. Or we would just joke about having me wear stilts in the pocket so that I can see. They also had me at their O Line party and it was a great time to watch them all eat so much food.
Give me a young Honoegah player to look out for?
We should have a lot of weapons next year. QB Payton Mather, OT Kaleb Etnyre, and RB Christian Gomez will be vital to their success
What advice would you give future incoming freshmen about the program?
Leave no regrets. Time flies. I wish I could relive the moments, but I put in everything I had. Just enjoy the process and always soak in the moments.
