Talking With One Of The Top QBs In The Illinois 2020 Class Benet's Colin Gillespie

So in a way to better understand the use of Deep Dish Football for Illinois recruits and the whole entire IHSA Football scene. Decided to do player profiles of players who you might not know or you might know , but you should respect them for their roles on their respective teams.

Colin Gillespie QB Benet Class Of 2020 6'1 175

Colin Gillespie has all the tools to be one of the best QBs in the state of Illinois for the Class of 2020. Great arm and throws with great touch with the ball, and when he as a open lane he can kill you with his feet. He also can fit most schemes at the college level, which makes this kid more dynamic.

Collin Gillespie what schools have you been talking to?

I’ve been talking mainly to D3 schools like Carnegie Mellon and MIT and few Ivy League schools including Dartmouth

You had to learn quick last season, What is one thing you are trying to improve in your game this offseason?

Yea it was somewhat tough being put into that situation with minimal varsity plays from scrimmage, but I think it was a great experience for me and the 7 or 8 games I got under my belt as a sophomore will help me immensely my junior year. This offseason I’m just working on gaining some weight to be able to take the blows needed to at the qb position as well as on speed to establish myself as a true dual threat qb, and of course staying sharp with mechanics and being able to throw every pass in the playbook with confidence.

Favorite memory from last season?

I think I’d have to go with the TD pass to Nick Keyes against LWC in the quarter finals. We had been working on that play all week and to see it work in the game was a great feeling.

What does Benet football mean to you?

Benet football means everything to me. I grew up watching my older brothers go through the program and always aspired to play at Benedictine, and now that I’m part of the program I think that’s what really motivates me to try my hardest in the offseason so that I can be the best player I can next fall

What motivates a Colin Gillespie?

Well after last year losing to Batavia in the semi-finals, what really motivates me is finally breaking through the barrier and getting to Dekalb. Benet’s been to the semis three times in the last 6 years or so but we haven’t been able to push through and achieve our goal of being state champions, so I really look to that loss last season and being so close to our goal for motivation

What do you like most about playing quarterback?

The thing I really about playing quarterback is the correlation between practice and the game. I really like the idea of watching film on a team and trying to find out holes in the defense and ways to beat the defense, then practicing it throughout the week, and in the game its great when everything comes together and you execute things you saw and worked on.

Who is one Benet player that college coaches might not know that should know?

Jacob Snell. 6’3 220 sophomore DE who’s incredibly athletic; he rotated in and out last year but I think he’ll get more playing time this year and really help the defense.
